As a regular on one of the most... obsessive and largest HP lists, I can confirm this - but mosly it's because we like arguing - very few fans seriously doubt it's in Scotland (and there is a lot more evidence for it than just the length of the train trip) but we've been waiting over two years for the latest book and we have to argue about something (-8 > simple proof - it takes around 8 hours by EXPRESS > train to get there, and they don't board a boat ...... > nowhere else in the British Isles it could be <g> Yes, but it's a magic train - there's no reason to assume it has to stay on land... Hey, we just want to have fun (-8 Although when people start using satellite photographs to identify local sites for Hogwats, I begin to wonder at their sanity. (I would never do that - I just spend many hours working out the visual magnitudes of planets in order to explain the possibilities of the phrase 'Mars is bright tonight'.) Now I am wondering about the possibility of ex-immortals being part of the Headless Hunt and getting horrible Highlander/Harry Potter crossover ideas intruding into my thoughts... Ah, so if Nearly Headless Nick had been immortal, would he have died, or would that flap of skin somehow have kept him from dying? ;) Barbara ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Feb 2003 11:35:20 -0500 From: KLZ3 <KZIMMERMAN3@cox.net> Subject: Re: Smallville meets HL I have one word for last night's Smallville: QUICKENING!!!!! Railway tracks go in straight lines, not circles, and trains can't go on boats. (they'd have to get off the train, board the boat, then board another identical train at the other side) Besides which, the author says it's Scotland. Just caught the very end with the plug by Christover Reeves and Superboy making the pitch for Reeve's web site. Have to make sure I catch the re-broadcast on Saturday. A Quickening? Like would be the case if the "express" train follows the old tracks of various local lines, just w/o the stops. > and trains can't go on boats. Are ALL the mundane things about the characters lives reported in complete detail? And, as someone else mentioned--maybe it's magic. Also, why must the Britain of the HP universe be physically configured just like the Britain of your universe? Just because 8 hours on an express train would have to take YOU to Scotland doesn't mean the same thing for the HP characters. > Besides which, the author says it's Scotland. Well, I assume she hasn't stated that factually in one of the books, or you wouldn't have brought it up. So, it isn't canon. At least--according to those HL fans who somehow ignore DM's countless & all-hetero on-screen romances & burble on about slashy subtext between DM & just about every male character in the series. (Except Ursa--& if there's DM/Ursa stuff out there, I really don't want to know about it.) You posted that some HP fans argue Hogwarts isn't necessarily located in Scotland, despite evidence to the contrary--not to mention common sense. I was pointing out that such idiocy is nothing compared to HL fans arguing that Duncan has the hots for Methos. You drag slash into completely unrelated conversations. Now that's illogical. Please, leave it alone already. On another, equally non-HL, subject, did you hear the sad Buffy news? Sarah Michelle Gellar is calling it quits. ::: heavy sigh ::: Pat ------------------------------ End of HIGHLA-L Digest - 25 Feb 2003 to 26 Feb 2003 (#2003-27) **************************************************************
