I've been there! It's directly behind the parking lot where they filmed the tag scene from Homeland! - In the opposite direction is the Highlander Statue. Another reason to see the next Harry Potter movie! Parisrose --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! I heard about the fire, I just didn't know that it was in Glennfinnan, or near anywhere where Highlander was filmed. That's really sad about the fire, but it's kind of interesting how it was near a Highlander filming spot. Yes! Everyone must see Prisoner of Azkaban! Gary Oldman is in this one. :-D Jen ----- Original Message ----- From: "mama bear" <parisrose_2@yahoo.com> To: <HIGHLA-L@LISTS.PSU.EDU> Sent: Monday, February 24, 2003 8:36 PM Subject: Harry Potter meets HL > Interesting brief article in todays paper: Seems they had to halt filming of the new Harry Potter film as there was a grass fire which had covered over 100 acres of land near a distinctive railroad bridge in Glenfinnan, Scotland. If you are in the car park for the monument it's behind you. It was one of several fires which broke out in Scotland over the weekend. Believe it or not they think it's because it's too dry. It's about 80 acres of brushland that's been destroyed. Another was at Kyle of Lochalsh, don't think there was much destruction there. As to the Harry Potter films - they have all filmed there. Not just looking towards the viaduct but also in Glenfinnan station. While the Highlander gang were there filming Homeland, a train went across the the viaduct the cameraman had a few moments scrabbling about to get the some film of it. I guess it didn't work since it never appeared in the episode. Not just >looking towards the viaduct but also in Glenfinnan station. I remember seeing the viaduct in the first movie as the train went to Hogwort's and thinking it was amusing that the school was somewhere in Scotland. The last time I was in Glenfinnan they had finished the Visitor's Center that was just getting under construction the first time I was there. I suggested to my husband that I thought the National Trust should put a special donation box at the foot of the statue for HL fans. :-) Liser -- Lisa Cameron-Norfleet ** cgliser@earthlink.net -- The difference between truth and fiction: fiction has to make sense --Mark Twain ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 Feb 2003 09:46:05 EST From: Dotiran@aol.com Subject: Re: Harry Potter meets HL In a message dated 2/25/2003 4:20:55 AM US Eastern Standard Time, ElaineN@compuserve.com writes: > a train went across > the the viaduct Have been on that steam train. The view from the viaduct is breathtaking. Must make plans to go back to Scotland one day. "Prove it's in the Scottish Highlands" go the arguments. simple proof - it takes around 8 hours by EXPRESS train to get there, and they don't board a boat ...... nowhere else in the British Isles it could be <g> Jette (aka Vinyaduriel) "Work for Peace and remain fiercely loving" - Jim Byrnes jette@blueyonder.co.uk http://www.jette.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/ http://bosslady.tripod.com/fanfic.html ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 Feb 2003 14:25:57 -0500 From: Elaine Nicol <ElaineN@compuserve.com> Subject: Re: Harry Potter meets HL >> I remember seeing the viaduct in the first movie as the train went to Hogwort's and thinking it was amusing that the school was somewhere in Scotland. << Well the author does live in Scotland. Apparently the school is based on Gordonstoun in Aberdeenshire. >> The last time I was in Glenfinnan they had finished the Visitor's Center that was just getting under construction the first time I was there. << Wow - when were you first there. The visitor centre was there the first time I visited back in the 70's. Oh they did recently added bits and update it. Well there is always room for improvement in these places. My favourite of the visitor centres is the one at Culloden. Whenever I am up near there I like to go to that one, the selection of books there is great. The Trust visitor centres are where I buy most of my history books. >> I suggested to my husband that I thought the National Trust should put a special donation box at the foot of the statue for HL fans. :-) << Not a bad idea - there is a place inside where you can join the National Trust - where you pay for your tickets, and I'm sure they will take any donations any one cares to give them. Let's face it the upkeep of all those places just eats money. Maybe I misremember...as I certainly wasn't there in the 70s. :-) I was there in...like...97? The year that PW went to Nightwatch in Glasgow. I remember that the center was under construction...I didn't think there was anything there at all, though--because I remember having to go to the bathroom and holding it all the way back to Ft. I was just looking at the programme from Nightwatch the other day. Someone had been asking me about the online conference that we did with Peter and it put me in the mood to find it. That was a great convention. >> I remember that the center was under construction...I didn't think there was anything there at all, though--because I remember having to go to the bathroom and holding it all the way back to Ft. In fact I seem to remember having to stop on the road. So much has improved in the North. I think they finally came to realise that Scotland's history and scenery are as much a resource as oil or coal. I just wish that more of the population would realise how valuable it is. >> I liked that one. And I liked the one at Glencoe...I had a really nice chat with an older gentleman there on my last trip over. << The Glencoe was is good too. It's in such a beautiful setting, even the car park is attractive. I know that it wasn't there the first few times I went up through there. >> I always stuff the coin boxes with the change in my pocket at the time. I think I dropped some bills in Glenfinnan in 2000...just because. :-) << Thanks :-) Every bit helps. I do the same when I visit any of these places, either here or abroad. One reason I like to buy my history books at the centres is because I know the profit is going to help keep the trust going. Or, the boat just wasn't mentioned, for some reason. Or, the author is holding back facts--like a natural disaster requiring massive detours. Or, in the HP universe, trains go REALLY slow. Or, it could all be an elaborate, senseless ruse. For the type of person, say, not convinced by 119 eps of Highlander: The Series that Duncan is straight, anything is possible. Hogwarts could be located in Hawaii--or in Seacouver.
