Try us. In South Africa, DVD players cost a *minumum* of R1,000. So they're ALL expensive. Plus, most will only play Region 2 disks (the UK system). Now, some companies get Region 1 DVDs from the States and sell them without telling people that there are such things as different regions. And then people post messages to S.A. discussion boards going, "But my DVD won't PLAY!!" Or you buy a region 2 DVD labelled "This disk is not Web enabled" (I still don't know what the hell THAT means) and it won't play on ANY region setting on your fancy Pioneer DVD player that will play EVERYTHING else. I tried to play to dvd's on 3 different dvd players, and they were stuck in the same spots over and over. I returned the dvds, and only just last month, re-ordered the set when they were on sale. The new set works. So, Lynn, here is one consumer who did try to play the dvd's on multiple players in spite of your claims to the contrary. The viscious tone of this discussion disturbed me back when I first posted my difficulty, and it it continues to do so. There are defective dvd's, plain and simple, not to say that all of them are defective. Claire, yes, you are... in fact you're the only person on this list I recall making such a complaint. I clearly said that there probably *were* some bad discs out there. A few isolated problems with a few discs are not indicative of a widespread "quality control problem" with the HL DVDs as some people apparently believe. Any look at a general home theater forum will show that almost every DVD release has isolated cases of bad discs. My point (which seems to have been lost in the muddle) is that not *every* problem is attributable to a bad disc, and that it wasn't a conclusion that should be immediately leapt to, as some people have.
