HNR Interview with Peter is up w/pics! ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 1 Sep 2003 22:28:24 -0700 From: Gregory Mate <gmate@rogers.com> Subject: Re: Suede nails and poll calls (or something)/Seacouver RepCo >It doesn't take strength of character to be an ER doc? :::: >raised eyebrows :::: I take it you don't know many ER/trauma >personnel <g>. I do know a few, actually, and I never made that generalization, nor did I ever question the good doctor's strength of character. I simply felt that Tessa was a stronger person than Anne. Perhaps I was vague, so let me explain my position. Zk: > Anne, otoh, apparently decided early enough in life to be a doctor that she put off having much of a social life (which I blame for the awkwardness as well as the wardrobe), and was strongly motivated to do so. I think you'd have to be, to go through that many years of school/internship/residency. ER Docs, esp. starting out, often have horrendous six-figure school loans, and their income is relatively low, so she obviously wasn't in it for the money. She truly cared about people and when she was in Doctor mode, she became oblivious to everything <snip> I've known a number of people who chose the medical profession yet did not have the social awkwardness of Dr. Anne. Motivation is needed, certainly, but social ineptitude cannot simply be blamed on one's career choice. And there are many people in various social and medical fields who truly care about people, yet can still find time for relationships. Admittedly some cannot, or choose not to. I saw Anne as socially awkward to begin with, and didn't have a chance to be a "late bloomer" due to her total commitment to healing people. <Side note: Gregor was for his time the same thing as Anne was to her time. His care and feeling for his patients, while I'm sure was as genuine as Anne's, disappeared because he lacked the strength of character to realize that (a) you cannot save everyone and (b) just because mortals will eventually die does not mean the healer's job is in vain).> >We saw Tessa in some tense situations, either watching Duncan go >off to war, or facing Grayson, or when she was kidnapped in The >Darkness. But she had a firm, long-term, relatively untroubled >relationship with Duncan for many years, and she owned an antique >store, with all of its challenges (maybe negotiating the Escher >Antique Store was enough). While I admitted that Tessa was "eased" into the world of Immortals (and Anne was not, so Tessa had the situational advantage there), Tessa was also suddenly dropped into the darker side of Immortals with the meeting of Slan. She was able to face Grayson. She was able to leave a discernible trail when kidnapped by Caleb. By doing so she demonstrated the ability to adapt to unfamiliar situations and to be able to think quickly. As an ER doctor, Anne would also have to think quickly in order to save a patient's life; however, she was able to rely on years of training and experience to do so. Tessa did not have such experience and training to guide her in her ordeals with evil Immortals. While Tessa may not have had the caring heart (at least not on the same level) and the same sort of intelligence as Anne, Tessa demonstrated the ability to be able to take in sensory overload and novel situations and deal with them more effectively, IMO, that Anne. If you recall, Brenda from HL1 was thrust into the world of Immortals much the same as was Anne, and she still stayed with Connor (until she died in a car accident if you believe the events of the 2nd HL movie as gospel). I hope that explains my reasoning. Zk again: >Character? I think so. No question about it, and probably more than many of Duncan's love interests (at least what little was presented of them on screen). >Having enjoyed Duncan's libido for many years, I doubt if she'd >disapprove <g>. Heh. Probably just smile and shake her head. "Oh that scampish Scotsman is at it again!" >I think that comparing Amanda with anything is definitely >comparing apples and kumquats. Except that they were both tall >and thin, they had little in common. If Amanda had been a man, >Duncan would have whacked her in 1650. ::::looks innocently:::: But I thought he *did* whack her on many an occasion (prolly got the "Double Quickening" when he first met her and Rebecca in 1639). ....Greg.... gmate@rogers.com He Who Would Take Nails Over Felicia Martins Any Day ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 1 Sep 2003 21:08:03 -0700 From: FKMel <sgt_buck_frobisher@yahoo.com> Subject: Re: Suede nails and poll calls (or something)/Seacouver RepCo . I hope that explains my reasoning. That was in the third movie. Or are you saying second because you do what I do and deny the second films existence? That makes sense. > > ::::looks innocently:::: But I thought he *did* > whack her on many an occasion (prolly got the "Double Quickening" when he first met her and Rebecca in 1639). > > <ggl> I bet he did, too. The listowner can be contacted at ddoug@CATRIO.ORG If your posts to HIGHLA-L are being "submitted to the moderator of the HIGHLA-L list" please check out the section below titled "WHAT TO DO IF THE LISTSERV SAYS YOU ARE NOT SUBSCRIBED TO HIGHLA-L:" ----- All of you received the Membership Rules when you first subscribed to this list so I'm not going to repeat them here but I will hit a few high points. Also included is a few LISTSERV commands to change your subscription to this list. No Flaming Is Allowed. (see note) We have strict Spoiler Rules for the current first-run season. Please don't post a message about any current season episode until after you have read the Welcome message (this contains all the rules). This is a -private- mailing list. Do not forward information posted on this mailing list without the -original- author's permission. ALL ADS listing items for SALE, no matter how minor, MUST be cleared through the list owner FIRST. NOTE: Flaming: adj. (possible origin: Webster's 3.intensely emotional; ardent; passionate) Usage on Internet: intensely emotional and very derogatory remarks about an individual, a group, or a dearly held belief system (religious beliefs, politics, sexual orientation, certain TV series, etc.). To insult, treat with scorn or great disrespect. Flame remarks are usually empty of any actual facts, just emotionally charged opinions and sometimes obscenities. Flame-bait: derivative of Flaming (see above). Any remark, which in itself does not qualify as a Flame, but because of trigger words, irritating adjectives or phrases (usually used in a rude manner) is almost always guaranteed to elicit Flames from people who read the message. END NOTE BUT REMEMBER: Disagreements make for lively debate, and lively debate is what keeps this list INTERESTING!!! Do NOT send any 'public service announcements' unless they are related to Highlander. BTW if you receive a computer virus report check it against <http://ciac.llnl.gov/ciac/CIACHoaxes.html> before passing it on. ******************************************** HOAXES, VIRUS WARNINGS, SPAM OF ANY TYPE, INCLUDING SALES, CHAIN LETTERS AND DONATION REQUESTS, WILL NOT BE TOLERATED ON HIGHLA-L or HLFIC-L. ******************************************** Do NOT post 'test' messages. If you aren't receiving mail from the list, send email to ME and I'll look into it. To send a message to the group, simply address it to HIGHLA-L@LISTS.psu.edu. Also, you should be able to reply to any message from the list as you would normally reply to a message from a single person. If your messages are not being posted to the LIST, check to make sure that you are NOT including the message headers from any message that you might be replying to. A message that contains (in the body of the message) any unaltered email header that includes the address of the list will be bounce to the errors queue. <<Sender: HIGHLA-L@LISTS.PSU.EDU (Highlander movies and TV series) <<Reply-to: HIGHLA-L@LISTS.PSU.EDU (Highlander movies and TV series) <<To: HIGHLA-L@LISTS.PSU.EDU (Multiple recipients of list HIGHLA-L) The reason that these didn't blow up this message is because I preceded them with '<<' on each line. As LIST-owner, I reserve the right to remove anyone from the list who violates the rules (they are in the Welcome message that you will receive when you subscribe). USEFUL LISTSERV COMMANDS To change your subscription options to stop receiving the list of a period of time (i.e. for a vacation or finals week): send mail to LISTSERV@LISTS.psu.edu with only the following line in the body of the message (the Subject line is ignored): SET HIGHLA-L NOMAIL To change (or to reset) your subscription options to receive the list as separate email messages (default): send mail to LISTSERV@LISTS.psu.edu with only the following line in the body of the message (the Subject line is ignored): SET HIGHLA-L MAIL To change your subscription options to receive the list in a daily digest: send mail to LISTSERV@LISTS.psu.edu with only the following line in the body of the message (the Subject line is ignored): SET HIGHLA-L DIGEST To change your subscription options to receive the list as short indexes of all postings (you can then retrieve the messages that you are interested in reading): send mail to LISTSERV@LISTS.psu.edu with only the following line in the body of the message (the Subject line is ignored): SET HIGHLA-L INDEX If you want a prefix to show up on your subject lines to help identify which message come from HIGHLA-L then send email to LISTSERV@LISTS.psu.edu with only the following line in the body of the message (Subject line is ignored): SET HIGHLA-L SUBJ The prefix [HL] will appear at the beginning of each Subject line of all new messages from HIGHLA-L (The string 'Re:' will appear before the prefix on replies). If your mailer does not provide the mailing address of the person who sent a post (usually PC and Mac mailers) you might want to change your subscription option to get the headers also placed in the body of the message. To do this: send mail to LISTSERV@LISTS.psu.edu with only the following line in the body of the message (the Subject line is ignored): SET HIGHLA-L DUALhdr Be careful and edit these headers out of any reply because they may cause problems when you try to post the reply (the LISTSERV software may fail to post your message). To Unsubscribe: send mail to LISTSERV@LISTS.psu.edu with only the following line in the body of the message (the Subject line is ignored): SIGNOFF HIGHLA-L Note: DO NOT send mail to HIGHLA-L@LISTS.psu.edu to unsubscribe. It may seem that your SIGNOFF didn't take effect because you are still getting posts. There is probably a backlog of messages in HIGHLA-L's queue that were posted before you sent the SIGNOFF command. Those will continue to come until it gets to the timestamp when you unsubscribed. This can take several hours or might even take up to 24 depending on how backed up everything is. *WHAT TO DO IF THE LISTSERV SAYS YOU ARE NOT SUBSCRIBED TO HIGHLA-L: When trying to send one of these commands if you receive back a message saying that you are not subscribed to HIGHLA-L this means that your current outgoing email address has changed since you subscribed to the list. It is very common for system administrators to do this without notifying their users. The way to straighten this out is to SUBSCRIBE from your new address and SIGNOFF from the old. If you can't SIGNOFF from the old address please notify me and I'll remove it. If you post a message to the list and then receive a message stating that your message has been forwarded to the moderator (me) that is another indication that your outgoing email address has changed. I will forward your message to the list if I can determine that you are currently subscribed under any address (if the message doesn't violate any of the Rules). Send me email and we will straighten it out so that you can post unrestricted again.
