The object of terrorism is to stop people living their ordinary lives, so by doing that they win. Remember we in the UK have lived with terrorism most of our lives. I personally refuse to let anyone dictate what I can and will do in such a way, be that the IRA, ETA, Osama Bin Laden or George Bush. At the same time I believe in freedom of choice and if you wish to withdraw because you are spending more time on something else that is your choice, and needs no apology. I had not posted anything in the discussion for a while I had nothing further to add, but I continued to follow it. However your post feels as though it is saying that none of us should be doing anything which might be considered frivolous, I'm sure that's not what you meant though. Frivolity is big business. Shirley Temple movies, as well as movies portraying the Lives of the Rich, Famous, and Agile, with profusions of silky, clingy gowns and top hats, were very big during the Great Depression. WWII, including the time just before the US entered the war, gave us The Wizard of OZ and movies like The Women, and there were a whole lot of photos of Rita Hayworth and Betty Grable on barracks walls evrywhere. Of course, WWII also gave us Casablanca. Now, if we could just come up with a decent alternative to the infernal combustion engine, I'd be thrilled. As for the current discussion, the only thing I noticed is that it got a bit - um - acerbic earlier than usual. No problem, Pat. As you say, there are much more important things happening in the world. While having the uttermost repsect for any soldier and their families at such a difficult time and wishing to pass on my best wishes to all of those in such a situation , I feel very strongly about the climate of war rhetoric at the moment. I have absolutely no doubt that it will be an imminent issue if discussion here and everywhere and I hope we can all have just as good an exchange of passionate and heartfelt views in that case too. John Who will be swayed neither by terrorism or sound-bites. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Elaine Nicol" <ElaineN@compuserve.com> To: <HIGHLA-L@LISTS.PSU.EDU> Sent: Monday, March 10, 2003 12:38 PM Subject: Re: [HL] Slash? > Pat wrote: > >> > I've enjoyed this debate. From: mama bear <parisrose_2@yahoo.com> Here it is - the "regular" book - not sci-fi/fantsy or romance that has definite HL references is "Forever" by Pete HAmill I read several descriptions of the book and the closest name to any- thing HL-ish was the fact that last name of the main character was O`Connor. None of the other names mentioned had any HL connection so that doesn't seem to be the book I had heard about. That one had names of several series, not movie, characters. To the folks who sent book title/author guesses, thanks anyway. =}{= (heidi@apocalypse.org) ------------------------------ End of HIGHLA-L Digest - 9 Mar 2003 to 10 Mar 2003 (#2003-39) *************************************************************
