Yeah, I saw a lot of that too. I liked O'Neill. I liked him better before he started phoning in his performances in about Season 5. I wasn't sorry to see him go after Season 8- he so clearly wasn't interested in the part anymore. I don't think his absence is what killed the show. I think uninspired writing killed the show. > But I liked Mitchell a lot Browder has one of the best butts on TV. And I like the character too <eg> > But the show does feel a bit tired. Yeah, THAT'LL get people to > keep watching! I'm never too thrilled with all-powerful enemies. It just means that the writers have to come up with an even more all-powerful weapon that can kill the all-powerful bad guys. And then the next season they have to create a new new all-powerful bad guy. (OBHLR : Horton -Kalas-Ahriman) I'd much rather see SG1 out among the millions of possible worlds meeting interesting people with unique cultures than watch them battle Replicators (the Borg) or Anubis (Q) or the Ori (the Dominion). > I second you, though: Bulgaria?! I can't believe that they really think that the Black Sea coast can pass for the North Carolina Outer Banks (that's assuming they are actually filming on the coast and not in a Sofia sound stage.) >They should come to South Africa, where there's > beautiful scenery, lovely bright light and the occasional > criminal who escapes from court while still wearing leg-irons... Sound more like North Carolina than you can imagine, right down to the leg irons <EG> I wonder if this movie (Lost Colony) has the "lost" colonists being killed by the Indians <poor Adrian's character> or if they have them assimilated into the local tribes? Wendy (I prefer to think they were eaten by a giant amorphous monster ala "Phantoms". ) Immortals Inc. immortals_incorporated@cox.net "Weasels for Eternity" ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 Sep 2006 14:05:40 +0100 From: John Mosby - Laptop <a.j.mosby@btinternet.com> Subject: Lost Colony. First from the set. Just passing this along. Jenni's posted it to the major sites this morning... Hey all! We've heard from Adrian about his latest project, "The Lost Colony," which is about the mysterious disappearance of the colonial settlers of Roanoke. Check it out at Adrian's web site. You'll also notice short updates which have been posted in the past week concerning the premiere of "Little Chicago" and new merchandise being available through The PEACE Fund. For those of you in the US, have a great Labor Day. For everyone else...I hope your week is off to a good start! My husband David and I were talking about this the other day after the news broke. We're actually very disappointed that the series has been cancelled, because we've been enjoying the Ori storylines. Without a Big Bad to fight, Stargate devolves into self-referential comedy (hello, Wormhole X-Treme!), not that there's anything wrong with that. They need focus, and they found it. We were talking about why it was that the Jaffa worlds falling so quickly after so recently gaining their independence, and concluded that while the Jaffa leadership had been committed to the idea of independence, some of the rank and file might have been actually... longing for the days when they didn't have to decide their fates for themselves. They're a people whose entire cultural existence was based on the worship of "gods" who made all the decisions. Yes, they could have done something more interesting and daring by showing the struggle that remained ahead with factionalism between groups, and cleaning out pockets of Goa'uld resistance, but it would have been a series of one-off episodes the last season, with no unifying narrative thread aside from the Ba'al one. The Ba'al storyline raised the bar a little - any one of the duplicates could return to Earth and start messing with SGC's heads by manipulating the media -but ultimately they went with the Big Bad device. And I'm okay with it, because it's a BB with a twist. I see the Ori as a pretty obvious metaphor for any kind of cultlike group that depends on groupthink to control its followers, which is risky and likely to turn off viewers if they fail to pull it off. So far, I'm in, especially after the recent episode where they manage to lure an Ori ship to its destruction over the super Stargate. And then you get an occasional episode like the one with Mitchell stuck on the planet with the Nin-jaffa <http://www.blogula-rasa.com/archives/001681.php>, learning martial arts, which amused me because I caught the references to classic Star Trek's "Amok Time." I'm willing to give 'em that, and Wormhole X-Treme, too. Also, I can watch Vala punch Daniel over that console over and over again from their earliest encounter. Ow? Sure, I miss O'Neill, but agree that RDA didn't want to work as hard as he had been. I was actually glad Mitchell got the band back together, and I'll be sad when they stop playing for good. OBHL: There is always some sort of Highlander connection with SG-1/Atlantis. You just have to look for it. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 4 Sep 2006 19:08:08 -0400 From: Wendy <Immortals_Incorporated@cox.net> Subject: Re: Lost Colony. First from the set. Rottie says: > Check it out at Adrian's web site. So I did. Ruthlessly stolen from AP: <<<But I can say that, on a production level, they've come up with a fantastic looking film even though it's on a limited budget.>> Just once I'd like to hear from AP and have him mention the extravagant budget for a film. Hell, I'd settle for hearing about an *adequate* budget. <<They really want to make something good and though it's a fictional story which has some supernatural elements involved, the actual story is trying to be as close to the known original historical facts as possible.>> Supernatural elements? I guess I wasn't so far off with my ancient amorphous monster suggestion. So ... the 117 colonists were spirited away by bog monsters? Eater by vampires? Bewitched into drowning themselves by the local shaman? Cursed by a rouge Hayoka? (Note the OBHLR there) << I hadn't heard all the specifics before taking the role, though I read about it online>> This explains a lot- he picks roles without doing any research <eg> << (There were) these 117 colonists who left England, recruited by John White, and amongst them was his pregnant daughter and her husband, Annanias <that really should be spelled "Ananais"> Dare (my character). They landed on the North Carolina coast, and because of the lack of supplies and provisions, John White had to go back to get more supplies. Unfortunately, because of the weather and the war with Spain, he couldn't get back to Roanoke for years. By the time he did get back, the colonists had all disappeared. Our version is a story of hope - lost hope ->> I think the Indians killed them all. The simplest explanation is usually the right one. <<and it really should end up being visually interesting, too.">>> Yes...interesting. Using a Bulgarian lake to stand for the North Carolina coast is...interesting. More interesting is the fact that couple of British film students with 5000Pounds have made a 90 minute movie of the same name and done what looks like a bang up job of it. http://roanokethemovie.com . Maybe Adrian joined the wrong movie <G> Wendy( So I assume "The Source" will be coming out soon on VHS?)(And, yes, I meant VHS.)
