Anthony De Longis, anyone? Anyone? Doug... molli: >*squeaks excitedly* ROB! Niki was just asking me the other day where you were. Do you still have the sumo wrestler she made you? Heyhey! I remember the sumo fondly! He used to hang from my rearview mirror and was an awesome indicator of the steepness of hills and the sharpness of curves. Swing! :) Unfortunately, I had a truly impressive car accident (dang, was it really 9 years ago?), flipped, slid upside down for an eternity, and luckily crawled away from the wreckage with just a scratch or two. While scavenging for my belongings in the swath of destruction left behind me, I realized I lost the sumo - along with the windshield, rear view mirror and much of the roof. It must still be somewhere on a barren piece of desert alongside the interstate between LA and Las Vegas. Poor sumo. But things are going great for me! For the Highlander franchise, not so much. But I owe HL (and the List) bigtime for the friends, family, relationships that came from it. ::settles back in his rocker and listens intently to the creaks:: ::adjusts it so it squeaks out what sounds suspiciously like "Deeeb - biiiiiiie" to taunt Wendy:: ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Jan 2006 23:06:24 -0500 From: Heidi <heidi@bronze.lcs.mit.edu> Subject: Re: The Source (was: "Book of Daniel"...) From: Wendy <Immortals_Incorporated@COX.NET> Talked to anyone in the know? Is it set in the future [..] I think it's time for some baseless speculation. That suddenly brought to mind the footage from the Endgame trailer that was never meant to be in the movie. Especially the picture of I think it was Duncan and Connor jumping thru the Stargate-like object. I can almost picture them trying to reuse that footage to save money on the movie given some of the reports so far. =}{= ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 31 Jan 2006 06:40:57 -0500 From: Katie King <katking@UMD.EDU> Subject: DEBBIE!! Yes, this is my strategy as well: go in the day when I'm the only one in the theater, so definately by myself! Laugh, cry, snark, moan, be intense, be outraged, be awestruck, be whatever in the dark and see whether this one is worth coming to see again with anyone else. I want it to be good! I want it to be like a good TV ep, actually I want it to be BETTER! I want to respect AP and PW and JD and others. And I want to know if Debbie is okay, and how it all looks to her too. I think G2 was my first HL group experience..... How about treating > Christianity with the respect we show to every other > religion? A) Unless I actually *saw* the wax figures, I couldn't say if they were offensive or not. Was Beckham in a football jersey or dressed in "authentic" clothes? Was Posh Spice (doesn't she have a real name?) dressed in modern garb or the traditional Madonna robe of blue? (Who decided Mary wore blue?) Do we know what the real Joseph and Mary looked like? Do we know they *didn't* look like Beckham and his wife? (OK, the odds that Joseph and Mary were blonde and blue-eyed are pretty small but no one seems to bitch about *that* anymore.) All representations of these figures is based on varying cultural interpretations. B) It was more offensive that George Bush was portrayed as one of the Wise Men. C) In Britain, as in the USA, Christianity is the majority religion. In huge swaths of America today it is still assumed that one is a Christian and surprise (and often unease) is expressed when it is discovered that one is of some other faith. Many people (too many) take it for granted that anyone they meet holds the same, or at least very similar, religious views. When one is in the majority (be it racial, religious, ethnic, etc) one is suppose to be able to handle a bit of ribbing from those in the minority. After all, you hold all the power - you should be able to take a bit of criticism or even some bashing. The reason why steps are taken to protect the "other guy" is that it's the other guy who *needs* the protection. Despite the wailing and hand-wringing and claims of being under attack, Christians are the overwhelming majority religion in America. Our laws (too often for my taste) reflect the dogma of Christianity. Our legislatures and courts open each session with a prayer to the Christian god. Our elected officials are overwhelmingly Christian and those who aren't learn to keep their heads bowed at the right moments. If Christians in America (or Britain) feel threatened it says much much more about their own paranoia and xenophobia than it does about reality. I realize that the concept of having to share your country with people who don't pray in the same way you do (or maybe don't pray at all) frightens people. In many parts of the world, at many times over the centuries, it has frightened people enough that the only solution was to kill all the unbelievers and the heretics and the guy down the street who made the joke about the Cardinal's funny hat. No one likes to see his religion laughed at. But if you belong to the biggest strongest religion around, you have to be big and strong enough to shake it off. Or you can start beating your plowshares into iron maidens and thumb screws. . .because that's where all this preaching about "anti-Christian" sentiment is heading. In the name of "quit picking on us poor widdle Christians" the next inquisition will be born. Wendy(God help us all when the flaming sword of modern American Christianity decides to stamp out the unbelievers in their midst.)(Oh wait, we already have that.)(Debbie?) I'm not going to quote what Wendy said; all her points are good. On a forum I'm on (I think; it was a while back), someone said that as soon as someone of another religion mentions something negative that happened to them because of their religion, all the Christians immediately jump in with how they have it much worse. Which I don't think is the case. A person does feel somewhat put upon by silly laws that say you can't wish people Merry Christmas if you work for [some American store], but I'll wish people Merry Christmas if I want to. Also, I had Moslem parents wish me Merry Christmas and I'm sure I accidentally wished some Moslems or Hindus Merry Christmas and they didn't take offense; nor did the world end. Christianity has lasted for 2000 years; I doubt some TV program (who was in it that we're discussing it in the first place?) is going to bring down Christianity/ civilization as we know it. Also, why not make _your_ point (such as it is) _yourself_? >>>why is Christianity the only religion that it is OK to openly mock?>>> Because Christians are the majority here in the US. The VAST majority. They run the show, they control the purse-strings, they write & enforce the laws, etc. Congratulations! Now, should Christianity ever become a minority religion here, you better pray for religious tolerance. In the meantime--quit your whining. Rottie, I really would like to hear exactly what made you see Book of Daniel's Jesus as a wimp (as you have repeatedly stated was so offensive to you), as opposed to the compassionate & forgiving (if badly wigged) deity I saw on the screen. Would you have liked the show better if there had been more smiting?
