Looked like nuts to me, in the shell. Walnuts? Chestnuts? Could be coal, I guess. Seems a little more plausible that young Bernard would have gathered a load of nuts from the forest to help feed the group, than that he'd be wheeling around a load of coal. Would coal back then be all nice & uniform like this seemed to be, as though it came out of the Matchlight charcoal bag ready for the grill?
