Granted Crighton is the lead > character but he would be nothing without the others and that's how > the writers write it and that's how it is directed and produced. The > makers of Highlander:TS never learned how to do that. TPTB pretty much stuck to the loner premise as set out in HL1. DM certainly had his share of pals, but it's hard to stay buddy-buddy w/ folks that one's undeniable creed says will die--quite possibly at your own hand, unless of course they kill you first. (Duck, Richie, duck!) HL was clearly DM's show, while Farscape merely uses Crichton for the human perspective--to show just how wacky all the aliens really are. ZK-- >>>I just haven't been able to get into a series to the obsession level since HL. I think it spoiled me for the rest of TV. I keep comparing everything to HL: "Oh, yeah, they did that in [insert name of ep] and it was better cuz..." >> Classic Trek did it for me, though I was far too young back then to realize how special the obsession experience is. Then, after a VERY long drought, Highlander. Now, thankfully, Farscape. I enjoy other genre shows now, but none grabs me on all levels. And "regular" non-genre shows, while I follow a few as time permits, don't come close to fully engaging me. (Probably the only "must-see TV" for me that isn't genre would be West Wing.) [I really don't think there are any Farscape S4 spoilers below--just general comments on the show.] Farscape works the brain, big-time. It drops hints that pay-off a whole season later; there is terrific continuity, IF one can keep up. It's crazed, infuriating, & just plain _hard_ to get; once you get half way there, it all turns on a dime. The jaw just STAYS in the dropped position. Anyone who says she fully understands Farscape is a liar or a fool. HL aspired to all that; the well-researched historical flashbacks, DM's timeline, the usual adherance to canon (HL:Endgame be damned), etc. created a strange yet coherent universe for fans to explore. (As fanfic writers can attest.) Neither show bothers to show & tell us everything that happens to the characters & instead expects/allows us to fill in blanks. (As fanfic writer can ALSO attest.) Farscape fires the imagination like no other sci-fi show. Its far-flung universe is the bizarre place it should be; its aliens are just that--not humans in masks. HL tantalized w/ elegant sword fights to the death, plus immortality--something that sounds good at 1st but clearly has a huge downside. Farscape exhausts the emotions. The characters care for each other & make the viewer care, too. The puppets give & take w/ nearly as much physicality as the actors; there's a brief but unforgettable shot near the end of season 3, of John & Pilot leaning in to touch foreheads, that conveys an amazing pathos. Even the living ship & her wayward progeny inspire concern, in a hostile universe FULL of nastiness. And, the villains are delicious--so integral & terrific that TPTB (usually) can't bear to dispose of them! HL (& especially AP) knew how to tap into viewer emotions, making us care beyond reason for DM, RR, Tessa, Joe, & even Amanda & Methos (& scores of 1-ep characters) as they handled impossible situations w/ aplomb or at least humor. HL's best villains--Horton, Kalas, St. Cloud, EDM, Kronos, etc.) were worth cheering--& bringing back for return engagements. And, last but by no means least--Farscape engages the libido; or, white-wash it as "romantic streak." Ben Browder/John Crichton is as drool-worthy as they come; as a vegetarian, I give myself special dispensation to adore what he does for leather pants, & that certain jacket.... Claudia Black's Aeryn Sun is equally awesome. (And the "equal" part is quite real on Farscape--HL could have done a bit better there.) The J/A ship is legendary; will they/won't they/please, can I watch? HL had AP, & it doesn't get better than that in the drool dept.--shirtless, in/out of the tub, flashing his undies, jogging, working out, performing a breathtaking kata, making passionate or giggly love, or merely reading a book or walking across the room.... His Tessa & Amanda relationships (plus all the rest) were mesmerizing, if doomed to break our hearts, & both Alexandra Vandernoot & Elizabeth Gracen added immeasurably to the show as a whole. Whew--that got long. Anyway, it takes A LOT to fully engage the fandom obsession, at least for me. Most shows--even the "hot" genre shows--aren't going for that; they churn out OK eps that can be watched, enjoyed, & forgotten. HL created an intriguing world for fans to visit, & so does Farscape. We have seen up to the end of season 3 of Stargate, not including 'Nemesis', and have only reached season 5 of Star Trek: Voyager, and recently the 1st season of Farscape. Andromeda started this weekend, and we are currently in the 5th season of Bab 5, and have only had 5 seasons of X-Files (Marina - will speak to Lisa soon, and hopefully get the details to you ASAP - not sure exactly how much she wanted, and forgot you were doing it until you reminded me!! Naughty naughty.) We never saw the ends of ST:DS9, or ST:TNG, Earth: FInal COnflict seems to have vanished, and there were many many other good shows we never saw hide or hare of. If a show is cancelled, especially after 1 or ½ a season - we are guaranteed to get it! Luckily for me, we had a Highlander fan on SABC, or else they had been delaying showing them and had to return them soon, for although we were at one stage many years behind, we did get Highlander non-stop from season 3-6 (minus AAA so Richie still lives in SA!!) SO for those of you who don't manage to see a season till re-runs, and only have to wait till next year to know what happens, take pity on us down SOuth, who sometimes have to wait years for the return of a favourite. Think about this - when Buffy and Angel used to do crossovers, we had to wait months to see the 1st or 2nd half, as they are screened consecutively, not concurrently (ooooh, big words). We ahve jsut concluded season 3 Angel, and are about to start season 6. I remember because I had a problem taping "Maternal Insinct" and was glad that I had it already. :) >We are probably some of the last people in the world to get anything >(unless of course it's a *must have* series like Survivor!! Well, during apartheid science fiction was a big no-no on the SABC because it advocated all sorts of 'dangerous' ideas. I mean, when TPTB at the SABC caught on to Star Trek, they refused to show any after the middle of the second season. Not to mention "V" - remember, they showed them all LATE at night; sometimes with like 4 a night, just to get it over with! We ahve >jsut concluded season 3 Angel, and are about to start season 6. Luckily, due to the fact that they are now on separate networks, there is not much chance of any more crossovers. Which might annoy Buffy/Angel 'shippers, but makes us down here very happy. No more grinding of teeth and waiting over 22 weeks to see the 'second' half of an ep... (Richie lives in S.A.
