More importantly has anyone received thei copy yet? Just wondering if I should be worried? Thanks, Chris ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 3 Mar 2001 10:14:06 -0500 From: Karla Julian <julkm@home.com> Subject: dvd tech question I must admit that I know next to nothing about DVD players and I recently bought the Endgame dvd. I see from the packaging that it is widescreen format. I assume that it was not done in full screen format. Is there a way to get it full screen without the bands at the top and bottom of the screen? I know that someone spoke about this earlier explaining the reason that the bands appear at the top and bottom, but I accidently deleted the post. I am tired of looking at scenes with a portion of Duncan and Connor's head cut off. And not from a quickening either! LOL! Is there a setting that can be changed in the menu or setup to get full screen? Or am I out of luck? :-) Karla ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 3 Mar 2001 23:32:41 +0800 From: Gerry Alanguilan <gerry@alanguilan.com> Subject: Re: dvd tech question At 10:14 AM 3/3/01 -0500, you wrote: >I must admit that I know next to nothing about DVD players and I >recently bought the Endgame dvd. Hello Karla....the bands are there simply because the film is being shown in the original aspect ratio that it was seen in theaters. You are not getting a movie that has been cut above and below. You are in fact, getting the "whole" picture. The reason there are full screen movies on TV is because the sides of the picture had been cut off and moved side to side depending on who is talking or where the action is happening. This is called "pan and scan" and this is used on every movie shown on TV that is full screen. In this case, you are not getting the whole picture, as opposed to seeing it in widescreen. Check this page out for more info: http://www.unik.no/~robert/hifi/dvd/wide.html There are certain DVDs that have 2 versions, for example Blade Runner. One side has a full screen version, and on the other side, a widescreen version. If you rent this DVD, you will be able to see just how they cut the picture to fit the whole screen and how much information is lost. If you want to lessen the size of the black bars, you can if your TV has the feature to "zoom". Your TV will zoom in on the picture and cut a little bit of the picture from the sides. Check this page out: http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Hills/6781/ This demonstrates the difference between full screen (or pan and scan) and widescreen in movies. Check out: http://www.widescreen.org and click on "Examples" if you want to see how much you really lose from those "full screen" transfers. In many cases they completely change how the movie looked in the theater (and not in a good way.) Letterboxing does take some getting used to, but once you do, it allows the closest re-creation of the movie as it appeared in the theater that you can get at home.
