Elaine's mum died on Thursday, so she may be "more distracted than normal" for a while, she says. Please DO NOT reply to this onlist, sympathy emails to Elaine herself (ElaineN@compuserve.com) or to me. It was an anachronistic romp - the rock soundtrack was jarring at first, and then it became part of the fun of the thing. There were a couple of sword-fighting scenes - my word, Heath Ledger really knows how to swing that double-handed blade <g>. Actually, the sword choreography was very good, very stylish (at least in the practice scene, the actual competition scene was more of a dirty street fight). Of course, most of the glory is in the jousting, so that's where the lead character chooses to concentrate his efforts. I couldn't tell from the credits who the fight coordinator was - there was no "swordmaster" credited, but the style looked very familiar to this HL fan. There's one banquet scene where Ledger's real-life dance abilities are featured - gee, yet another hot looking swordsman who can dance, eh? It's one of those anachronistic scenes again - there's rather a sly segue from period-sounding music to something a bit more uptempo. YKYBWHLT...long when every single actor in this movie looks like he could have or should have been in a Highlander episode. After checking the Internet Movie Database, though, no such luck. Could have sworn the actor playing the antagonist, Rufus Sewell, was an alum, but no. He had been the lead in "Dark City," though, so that's why he was so maddeningly familiar looking. There was a fair bit of singing along with the sound track, especially during the end credits - yours truly could not let the credits roll without coming in on the chorus of "We are the Champions." Queen songs are featured pretty heavily, though they avoided any song that was strongly associated with Highlander. Still, the overall impression is that they set out to make a rousing adventure swashbuckler that might find a cult audience. The primary audience appears to be teen girls for this movie, especially with the highly non-period costuming for the female lead/love interest - look for teens to copy some of her hair styles, make-up, and non-period "medieval lite" fashions. However, another audience target is probably boomers - maybe the Highlander fan demographic, too. <g> The rock soundtrack is mostly 70's classics. Bizarre, I know, but somehow it kinda works, especially in the aforementioned banquet/dance scene. If you see this movie, check your medieval history/period costume/early music expectations at the door - it's fun, but not to be taken too seriously. &detail-disoriented Ginny "No HTMLs were beheaded by the Internet in this .sig" ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 3 Jun 2001 18:40:58 EDT From: Dawn Lehman <USTADAWN@aol.com> Subject: Re: Spoilers: A Knight's Tale As an additional comment, I took my son to see this the day it opened (May 11) and one of the funniest scenes in the movie was after the rolling of the credits at the end. Of course, everyone had left the movie (all except me and my son; I always stay to the bitter end) and they rolled a short scene with the lead actors playing around with.....well, I won't spoil it for everyone. It's rude, crude, "butt" funny. he. he. he. The movie is definately worth seeing. I loved it and this is one I'll buy when it is available.
